The design students at the University of Colorado Denver College of Arts and Media have created a new kind of live theater that will be performed in a full dome environment at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s Gates Planetarium. Laura Cuetara is directing this adaptation of Joan of Arc and the design students have created ‘environments’ that will be projected onto the planetarium as a sort of ‘virtual set’ for the actors. I will be contributing one ‘celestial’ sequence towards the end of the performance.
The DMNS Gates Planetarium is one of a handful of domes that have been outfitted with stage lights and a stage for live theater and there have been very few if any complete theater productions that are utilizing full dome content. The images at the top of the page are examples of the Dome Master format that is used in full dome presentations. Full dome is literally impossible to describe or document, the only way to really get a feeling for these scenes is to be in the dome and in the full dome immersive environment. The play will feature 15 different set designs which are designed to meld with the content of the play and should provide for a truly unique experience.
In order to arrive at these designs, the students submitted a number of design comps to match the various scenes in the play.

[...] Information about the performances [...]
[...] Last Tuesday I had a visit at the DMNS Gates Planetarium to see what this constellation of voices is all about. My last experience of making an animation for the dome last year was quite interesting, but this year Bryan Leister is taking the group into a different step. It is not just animation. A group of design students at the University of Colorado Denver is collaborating with the theater department to create a live theater in a full dome environment. No other words I could use to describe this, all I can say is that…I can’t wait to see the show!
